I'm back!
Oh my it's been months since my last post. How have you been?
A lot has happened in the last few months for us. I turned 31 (waaaa!) and Mia turned 3!
She's the cleverest, cheekiest 3 year old you'll ever meet. Her vocabulary of both English and Malay has grown extensively and quite often what she says are funny, witty and bound to surprise you.
My boy Adam is a lot taller now, most his clothes are starting to look short on him but he's still as thin as ever. He is homeschooled and very proud of the fact. He's my little homeschool ambassador.
And there's another little surprise. Notice a, ehem, small 'bump' in the picture above? I'm almost 5 months pregnant! Hello Baby no 3! Wish us luck!!
*pictures are from Mia and my birthday trip to Cameron Highland a couple weeks ago.

Adam's birthday gifts
Adam's 5th birthday is coming up this Friday. Five! We're all excited, especially him. I made him some handmade birthday presents.
This is a puppet theater. It wasn't a surprise gift, I let Adam chose a project for me to sew. He loved it and chose all the fabric himself. It's not his birthday yet but we already enjoyed many performances this week.
I made him a pair of smart pants to fit. He always have a problem with bought pant - if it fits his waist, it'll be too short but if it's long enough for him the waist will be way too loose. Children pants are way overpriced here anyway so as long as he will wear them I shall try to make his pants for him.
The waist has a faux fly. It opens up but only halfway to allow the pants to be put on. The back has elastic for long-wearing.
Then I made a red shirt for him. Red's his favourite colour and if you ask him he wants everything in red.
When he asked me who i'm making these clothes for I told him it's for my 5 year-old friend. He said "I'm almost 5, but not yet. Can I play with your friend?"
These are not expensive gifts. The shirt costed me next to nothing because the fabric was a scrap from years ago. I only had to buy the buttons (less than 50 sen for all). But it was made with a lot of love and I hope he will appreciate that one day.
I love you, Adam..
p/s: we're going for Adam's surprise birthday trip tomorrow! stay tuned for updates soon!

Surprise birthday trip
Last weekend we went to a surprise trip for my husband's 30th birthday.
This is Minang Cove resort, Tioman. I definitely recommend this place. The location is gorgeous, unspoilt and the service there is exceptional! They cater only to a small number of guests and we all receive personal, charming treatments from the staff. They know us and our kids by name. Love this place!
the kids think it was their treat instead. We couldn't keep these kids away from the beach the whole time we were there...
beautiful view from the jetty
my little boy goes exploring a lot around the rocks and corals. He had many cuts on his legs, splinters on his fingers, but nothing could stop him from enjoying the place. He fit right in.
the kids having afternoon tea with Sophia, the owner's beautiful 9 year old daughter. She looks english but talks malay fluently and is a real island girl. She knows where all the nemos are when snorkeling, she can dive deep with no equipment to pick up dead corals and sea cucumber.
Snorkeling is really good just off the jetty. Lots of corals and fish and good visibility.
Adam jumping in. He was fearless! water was 5-10m deep. my little island boy.
the birthday boy with his surprise birthday cake. The staff picked it up for me far from Tekek, they had to take a boat. tq guys!
don't know why this pic is coming out senget. My girl wearing her sunhat that she requested urgently and was sewn by a very tired mama the night before we go on the trip.
one of the highlight of the place - nighttime fish feeding off the jetty. We could see some big black tipped sharks!
time passed by way too fast on the island. It's time to go home...
we'll be back little fishies...

Adam's birthday party
We had a little party to celebrate Adam's birthday, just the 4 of us.
One of my birthday gift for Adam is this jacket. Took me about a couple weeks to make it. A really quick, awesome pattern (free too!).
I used a chunky size wooly yarn. email me if anybody would like a link to the pattern. The whole jacket is basically knit in stockinette stitch.I hope he enjoyed his birthday. At 3 years old, he is kind, considerate and very protective of his sister. He has his tantrums, and he sits on his sister too sometimes, but he always remember to apologise sincerely without being asked. His vocabulary is mainly English these days, and he amazes me everyday with new phrases and words. He knows his 'please' and 'thank you'. His creative energy is flowing, I can feel it, and I feel so lucky to be around to watch it develop.
I am so proud of you Adam. Really proud.
I love you Baby. Happy Birthday.

I am 28 years old
I had the most perfect birthday...
chocolate cake for Adam and cheesecake (my fav) for me. I really shouldn't be eating cake because of GD but i think this counts as a good exception..huhu..yummy..Of course Adam was the one who blew off all the candles before the birthday song was even over...hehe..
birthday gift from hubby. I haven't been using a wrist watch for more than a year. really need this. Thank you Bang..you really know me well..couldn't have chosen a better watch myself :)
In the morning after subuh I had some intense painful contractions..my husband dah excited, cepat2 charge hp..hehe..tapi pastu gone, takde dah..saje je Baby kasi teaser yer..In the afternoon we went for lunch at my favourite halal chinese restaurant in Bayswater...my husband repeatedly asked me, are you sure??? ok ke??? takut pulak kalau i go into labour while we're there..hehe..i think lambat lagilah Baby nak kuar...
Somehow we had the most beautiful weather today...as if it's almost spring..not so cold, temperature around 7C..and really, really sunny..we went to the park after lunch..Adam was soooo happy! Haven't been to the parks for a while..he got so busy chasing after birds and 'kel' (=squirrel). Tanak balik. The past days were wet, unlike today, so the ground was still damp in some places..Adam got dirt and mud all over his hands and clothes from falling repeatedly..But he doesn't care..he just kept going..(of course he asked us to 'lap' him first..this boy is really a compulsive cleaner like his Daddy!)
It's just a simple birthday celebration, really...but somehow this year i really feel like it's my best birthday ever...I feel so so blessed...I love my husband, my son and this baby so much...and i'm so lucky to have them in my life...I am content..Alhamdulillah..Thank you Allah for these wonderful gifts...

Let's grow old gracefully, shall we?
I had a wonderful birthday yesterday :)
In the morning before breakfast everything looked so gloomy and rainy outside, we didn’t think we could go out. But suddenly after breakfast, the sun decided to come out and everything is transformed! Terus we decided to take advantage of the weather…
We took Adam to Hyde Park! Wow how beautiful it is over there…subhanallah…

Hubby took me shopping and bought me a pair of new shoes as a birthday present..thank you bang! My old shoes that I wore for years in Sheffield suddenly cracked yesterday pulak…haha..mcm tau2 jer…ala lupa amik pic..
Hubby was ready to take me to dinner last night @ Edgware Road but suddenly bos kecik tu tido lena pulak at 5.30pm..laaa kesian lak nak kejut dia..finally he’s sleeping well! We decided we’ll just go when we’ve moved to our new apartment, which is walking distance to Edgware road. In fact Adam slept so well last night that he only wakes up for his normal feedings, no more coughing and crying! Alhamdulillah…and that also means, Mommy got a good night’s sleep! That must be Adam’s birthday present for me! Thank you Adam!!!
caaayang dia...At 27, I have a wonderful family who loves me and we’re here together in this exciting foreign land..Alhamdulillah..what more can I ask for..
To hubby and Adam, I love you both very much!!

Mommy @ 1 year
As Adam turned one, I stopped and thought about a lot of things that has changed ever since Adam came into our lives. Everything was so different just a year ago! It didn’t feel very long at all, and yet so much has changed. This month instead of writing about Adam’s development, I thought I shall write about the amazing changes in me that Adam has brought since his arrival a year ago.
I learned about breastfeeding. I was so ignorant back then. I took breastfeeding for granted. In fact, I felt a little embarrassed if I see a mother breastfeeding in public, even though she’s perfectly covered up. I had no idea breastfeeding could be such hard work, and could also be so rewarding in return. I didn’t know all the benefits, and thought breastfeeding comes naturally. I slowly learned and overcame many obstacles throughout our breastfeeding journey together. Today, I feel proud when Adam’s teacher tells me that he’s the only toddler (he’s now upgraded to the toddler class from the baby’s nursery) who is still fully breastfeeding. We have another year to go, and I hope we’ll get there.
I learned how to be a parent. When I was pregnant I was so nervous about how to take care of my baby once he comes out. I never held a newborn in my life (up until now Adam is still the only newborn I’ve held). But when Adam was handed to me in the delivery room, I held him in my arms and had no second thoughts whatsoever – this one did come naturally to me. I realised we are his universe, he has one else but us! So ready or not, we shall wash his poop, bathe him and try not to drop him! And so far, we survived =) Come toddler hood, we have a whole lot more to learn about child-raising. It’s not just “taking-care” of him now, we actually have to be parents and teach him a thing or two! I hope we’ll learn more so we can raise Adam to be the best person that he can be.
I learned to make homemade baby food. I know this part may sound simple and comes naturally to many super mommies, but to me this matters and I must put thought and energy to this. My husband and I rarely eat healthily, really. Because of time constraints, I only prepare homemade meals when I have the time and energy but when the time comes for Adam to start solid, I know I must make the effort. I wanted to know exactly everything that goes into his diet, to nourish him and to provide him healthy nutritious meals, as much as I can. Thanks to the ever-resourceful internet, I learned to make a variety of simple homemade baby food that I can make for him, even when I have very limited time. I do not claim to give him 100% homemade food, no, I do let him have his little baby rice crackers, baby biscuits etc, but I still believe homemade food is the best for him. A lot of love is put into making homemade food, and I think that is the most important ingredient. Now after a year, he can eat so many more things and it’s up to me to think up new recipes for him. Thank God wholesomebabyfood now has a toddler section! Hopefully in time I’ll learn to efficiently cook homemade meals for the whole family, even when working. Last month in Ramadhan I managed to cook mostly homemade meals since I could come home earlier and it was wonderful! We saved a lot of money, eat yummy healthy food and didn’t have to brace the crowds in Pasar Ramadhan!
I learned to be less selfish. I used to be a selfish person, and still am. But I learn to give more each day. Babies are such wonderful creatures. The moment you feel exhausted and tired they flash you a smile, and suddenly you feel so much better and so much happier. I love him so much that I would sacrifice anything in an instant, just for him. I’ve learned to be more patient, since I lose my temper quite easily, unlike my husband. I hope in the years to come I’ll improve more.
I learned about babywearing. It was a little late in the game, I guess, but it’s ok, I’m so glad I found babywearing because it has been such a wonderful and meaningful part of our lives now. I’m glad I didn’t succumb to the ‘normal’ ways of raising a baby – getting them to be ‘independent’ as early as possible, not responding to them when they cry so that they ‘learn not to cry’. Oh no, I do not want to imagine my baby growing up thinking his views doesn’t matter, his cry for help does not need responding to. As I wear him close everyday, I know him better, respond to him quicker and love him so much more. Plus I get my hands free to do other things! I know babywearing is an ancient art, but whoever thought it up, must be a genius! Eventhough I know our babywearing days may be less and less soon as he grows up and uses his feet more, I aim to dedicate more of my time into promoting babywearing and helping others find the same passion (or maybe have another baby to wear?? Hehe).
I learned to sew. Honestly, if you know me at all a year ago, you would definitely not believe I’m the kind of person who sews! All my old friends keep saying they can’t believe I’m sewing now. One particular friend said “Aida, you’re so motherly now”. Yes, motherhood has turned me domestic! Ok I’m no seamstress, but I can make things that mean something now. I can make handmade gifts that mean so much more than just something I can pick up at the shopping complex. I can dress my baby in clothes that I made with my own hands, though most may not be perfect but with love in every stitch. I can make boxer shorts for my hubby that he would wear 2 days in a row because he claims it’s just so comfy, pls make me more! I could make baby carriers and wear my baby in something that I made myself! Oh I could go on and on about sewing, I tell you. I feel like I’ve found my passion in life.
Wow. I can’t believe it’s only been a year. Being Adam’s Mommy has changed me in the best of ways, I believe. I wonder what other changes the coming years of motherhood would bring me? I look forward to growing along with Adam and whatever changes that come my way, I accept with open arms.
I am so blessed, Alhamdulillah. Thank you Adam for coming into our lives.
